Black History....Yesterday and Today!

The old lady in today's Black History Vignette said that your parents 'fell asleep' and have failed to fight the civil rights movement.  She challenged you to continue fighting.  What do you think?  Did your parents fail to fight in the civil rights movement?  How or how not?  What about you?  Do you address injustice?  How do you or how can you?  Write 7 lines about this topic . Also, be sure to respond to two or more classmates entries to receive full credit.
Here are expectations for blogging.

Our parent, Our ancestor wasn't on united states, so i don't know much about the civil rights fighting. But based on my knowledge on civil rights activities, if i was born on the time period of civil rights movement i would support MLK jr in his journey to the freedom. I would not sit ideally when white people were humiliating minorities, i would fight for my rights even if i had to go to jail for it.

I agree with you. If I was born during this time I would support the civil rights movement.

    4. It is interesting that you said if you were given the opportunity to have fought for civil rights and I think that is good and shows a lot about character.

  2. I don't believe that my parents helped the civil rights movement. I feel they were fine with how things were and that they just lived life regularly. I did not contribute to the civil rights movement, I didn't live during that time or did anything to be known about. I do address injustice by speaking how I feel and trying to take actions when I can and appropriately. When im able to help something to be fair I try to make things right and seek justice to be served. -Briel

I agree with you because my parents weren't old enough to understand what was going on at the time of the civil rights movement.

  3. I don't think my parents really fought for civil rights but they did take advantage of what they fought for by both going to college. either tho neither of them finished they still work hard. mom with her job and dad in the Marines. i plan on doing the same thing of taking advantage of what they fought for and graduate from college and getting a career

  4. I think that the older lady in the show was completely right when she said that the generations after the Civil Rights movement failed to practice their rights such as voting and kind of slacked off taking our eyes off the prize. Just because we had won equality does not mean that racism has been forgotten or has come extinct. Racism does very well still exist and is still very alive in our communities today and has claimed some innocent victims over the past years. You can address injustice today by practicing your rights as a citizen, supporting your inner communities, and families. For example with the whole Ferguson,Florida and New York situations resulting in the death of Trayvon Martin, Mike Brown, and Eric Gardner, as a black community we should stand by each other and support each other and also try to find solutions to the corrupt system that we live by.

    2. I agree with you. Our grandparents sacrifices their life for the rights and freedom for minorities and today's generation doesn't even appreciate and exercises the rights and freedom we have....TapaN

  5. I don't think my parents fail to fight for justice at all, they support anything that they feel that is wrong with our legislative and judicial system. I will say that sometimes they may not be able to fight for everything because they have other priorities that need to be taken care of. I actually do fight for injustice especially because I work with kids and adults and there are a lot of problems that would normally come up. Sometimes we would have meetings and discussion and try to come up with a solution. Back then speaking up or taking action was a matter of life or death, I would have been supportive but very discrete about it. -Aniayla

    1. Exactly I feel like being complacent comes with not caring and my parents care about what goes on because it can ultimately effect my future.

I don't think that what she said was accurate. Some of our parents weren't old enough to fight the civil rights movement and some of them probably weren't born yet. So, I don't think they actually 'fell asleep'. I know my dad was only about 11 or 12 when the civil rights movement was ending so I don't think he could have done much. I'm not really sure what we could do to continue fighting. If I could have fought the civil rights movement I would have, without a doubt but I'm not sure what I could do now.

    2. Exactly. Our parents couldn't have done much during the Civil Rights Movement but they have fought in their own ways and sacrificed other things. -Shadai

  7. My parents weren't alive during this time, but i am positive that they would've fought and sacrificed their lives for my siblings and i so that we could have a better life, the same way they are doing it now. My parents are both strong believers in what is right, and still to this day fight and sacrifice more than anyone i know. And they still keep fighting because there is still many unfair things in this world today. I on the other hand would've stuck up for what i believe in because that's how i was raised. - Shadai

    2. Good thoughts! Shadai, I think what Emmitt Till's mother meant was that sometime in between the formal civil rights movement and now, your parents fell asleep. Do you agree or disagree with her?

  8. As far as I am concerned yes my parents have failed in some way when it comes to fighting for the civil rights movement. But then again they know when something is being injustice towards someone. They know the right from wrong. Same thing goes for me. I know an di feel like sometimes the law has to give justice to certain people and they don't. I don't think that is correct. I don't think I can personally do anything about it because if something could be done it has to be done by someone who has power or a community. I don't think a single persons input would do anything. - Anthony

    1. I disagree! We all have power! If we say we don't then we take our power away from ourselves. Maybe we just need to learn more about how to use our power?

    2. I mean what is power if we weren't taught how to use it.

  9. I feel like we could've have really taken our eye off of things that much because things recently got bad. What could be better for a people than a plethora of black entertainers and athletes and even a black PRESIDENT. I would say that everything that we were fighting for then was coming to past but people may have misconstrued that we still care, and tried to take advantage of that. You really can't blame an entire generation for that because it isn't a matter to point fingers at. I feel like people die everyday but our people just so happen to be suffering now.

  10. I do think that my parents failed to fight for civil rights. My mother has never told me any way that she has contributed to the civil rights movement neither has my father. They do support that everyone has their own rights for what they believe in & I, myself, am doing whatever it is to help civil rights become important in society. However, I am not doing anything major, but a little does go a long way.

  12. My parents are not from united states, so am I. I don't really know much about civil rights movement but sure I have learned to the point where I could tell what would I do if I was in period of civil rights movement. If I was in that time, I would fight for freedom and rights. Base on History class, white had always dehumanized the blacks. To me this is not normal because I believe everyone should be treated as equal, no matter their color skin nor what race are they. -karan
