  1. In the movie i leaned more about the 13th amendment and how it goes deeper and more in depth than you. i was curios so i when researching and i found this wbesire. https://www.history.com/topics/black-history/thirteenth-amendment this website gave me more information about the 13th amen amendment things that happen around that time we it was made. But back to the movie to it was well made and i really like how they had it with facts. One more thing i learn that prisons are being filled with more than it should be.in the movie said there was a prison designed hold 12,000 prison but it hold 24,000.And there was this organization called alec and they had there own laws stuff made up stand to shot or something like that.this mane followed this young black teen around his own neighborhood and go into a fight him and shot and killed him he said it was self defense but you purist him when the cops said not to. but all because this one law that they made up couldn't be head to his actions.

This film illustrates how the implementation of the 13th amendment has turned African-Americans from being slaves in a colonial sense into new-age slavery due to a loophole that has ended slavery for everyone but offenders. This new-age model of slavery involves Jim Crow, lynching, and criminalization. Director Ava DuVernay pulled together a diverse array of individuals with varying cultures to address these issues, including a representative with ALEC, an organization that was strongly attacked in the film for their commitment to legislation that actually served to raise prison rates. The feature is one that makes this documentary exceptional. The website I used for an in-depth understanding provided evidence of us not being aware of these hard truths, and not taking the time to educate ourselves about the injustices that people in our culture face on a regular basis, just makes us part of the problem. Although more people were aware of the true reality, they would take advantage of the chance to access and examine this evidence and understand that we are trapped in a dilemma that will never stop until we stop it ourselves, this film may be of interest to much in our culture. But if we don't take the initiative to educate ourselves or fail to believe the fact that keeps looking us in the face when kicking our families in the back, we're still trapped in this destructive circle.

I learned about how the system is against black people.I learned about how prisons are overcrowded with prisoners. The movie said prisons house over half of the prisoners that the prisons are designed to hold. The movie also taught me that prisons make more money when more prisoners are in a prison. Police men were giving people a large amount of time in prison for petty cases.
Some insights I got was that most prisons house 2 times the amount of prisoners they are designed to hold. Police are targeting African Americans to arrest them for any petty crime to get money from having prisoners, the less people in prisons, the less prison owners are making. Most people of color or in lower class areas, will get at least 2 to 3 years in prison for any petty crime. January 31,1865 but when incarcerated your rights are taken away. There was a law set where judges will automatically sentence you guilty. They would make you face more consequences if you didn’t take the plea deal and took it to court, lots of innocent black faced time in prison for crimes they didn’t do.
The question is when will this be stopped? People go through these struggles everyday, and years are taken away from their lives and family. The movie “The 13th” was made in 2016, all the problems they stated, are those still problems we have to face today still 4 years later?
How will we solve these problems? If we did, how did we solve them?

  4. Queen- In the movie the 13th I learned about how life for minorities or people of color its harder and that there seems to be like a modern-day form of slavery, but by watching this movie it has helped me to realize more about the 13th amendment. The website I used to relate to this movie or to talk about the 13th amendment is here https://constitutioncenter.org/interactive-constitution/interpretation/amendment-xiii/interps/137
which the 13th amendment is what had abolished slavery as well as servitude. This website relates to the movie because it talks about how this amendment was needed in order to abolish slavery because of the things that are happening nowadays where people of color are in prison and are being treated unfairly and are living violently in prison and keeping them locked away in these harsh conditions. People who are in prison live this lifestyle where they are constantly angry or is fighting and are making people do things and also sometimes the guards make it worse and i Feel like that is where the system fails us because when it comes to minorities in prison they are less likely to receive help and this all acts out as modern-day slavery which needs to end.

  5. James - I learned about how the system works against black people. I also learned about how prisons are overcrowded with more prisoners than what it was meant to hold. The movie mentioned the lives of black people as a type of modern slavery and I agree with that because the systems works against us not with us.
The website I used to relate to the movie is https://www.huffpost.com/entry/prison-strike-modern-day-slavery_n_5b857777e4b0511db3d21da8
This website relates to the movie because it talks about prisoners who are protesting "mistreatment, bad facilities and the lack of fair wages for the work many are forced to do behind bars." This is something that relates directly to slavery when slaves didn't make any money but were given the things they needed to live.
