The Death Penalty:   Good Idea or No way?

Read the article on Tom Wolf declaring a moratorium on the death penalty.

Then, read this article about the legislature being angry that he unilaterally did that.

Write 7 lines about how you feel.  Is the death penalty a good idea or a bad idea?  Why or how?  What about Wolf? Should he have gotten consensus about this from the legislature or was doing it unilaterally fine with you?

Also, be sure to respond to two or more classmates entries to receive full credit.
Here are expectations for blogging.

  1. It is probably wrong thing to say but, i think the death penalty is a good idea. I don't want any man to get a death penalty, only people that should get that punishment is a criminal like serial killer. I think the Wolf should have contacted with his collages and higher authorities before canceling the death penalty. I think governor should re-consider his decision on this death penalty....TapaN

    1. i dont think its wrong since everyone haves their own opinion, because i think it can go either way, especially for a 1st degree murder.

    2. He should of contacted people ahead of time, but I feel its good he stopped it in a way.

  2. I think that they should have life in jail. unless they and their family really wants him to just get the ejection. So I don't think it was his or anyones choice since its another life. So the choice is for them to rot in jail for life, or he chose to end his life with the needle. So if he have gotten consensus about this from legislature because the majority opinion counts instead of just one.

I agree with you. I think they should get a life sentence with a choice of the death penalty.

  3. if they deserve it, then its necessary. i think that there should be a specific number of kills that you needed to do before you receive the death penalty. 3 kills or more seems fine, but any less than that can just be a life sentence, dont just go and kill everybody, because some people dont deserve to suffer the same fate as somebody who killed 3 times as many people as them.

    1. I think the 3 strike makes sense not just for murder but for 3 felonies

    2. I don't think that 3 strikes is a good system. Why give a person 3 times to kill then be punished ? That's basically letting them get away with it. - Domonique Swanigan

    3. I think you have some good points but, what i don't understand is what happens when someone only kills one person, i think one person's life is as important as three or more....TapaN

    4. I think that's a reasonable amount of kills in order to receive the death penalty but, you would have to keep this type of information away from the murderers because they may try to hide the bodies they killed. -Aniayla

    5. I agree with you. I think they should have a specific amount of kills before they get the death penalty because if 1 person only kills 1 person and gets like 30 to life, then another person only kills 1 person and gets the death penalty it's not really fair.

    6. I mean what really determines if they deserve it or not? Killing someone is killing someone what is the difference.

  4. I think the death sentence is something that shouldn't be taken lightly because taking a life is something huge. There's other ways of having someone punished for wrong doing other then death. I think it should only be given out when someone did something extremely inhumane and immoral like rape or killing sprees. If the government is worried about the cost I believe they could find an easier more effective way to execute this process - Domonique Swanigan

    4. Good job mentioning the cost. And I agree, taking a life is a very, very serious matter that should never be taken lightly.

  5. I believe that the death penalty is both a good thing and a bad thing. I believe if it is a psychopath or a serial killer who is definitely guilty then maybe they should get death penalty but not everyone. I think other people should get help and time in prison but not death unless it was real horrible. As for Wolf he should of got consensus because other people should have a say on how they feel about it, but with him just doing it its fine with me because not taking another persons life is not negative, some people might just want it to happen. -Briel

  6. I think that the death penalty is useless now a days. why should these people who have been convicted of senseless acts of murder and slaughter be allowed to go with out harsh punishment. The death penalty now allows the inmate to get off with death easily and peacefully. But why should they be allowed to get the easy road instead of having to deal with consequences. I do agree with Tom Wolf about not believing in the death penalty. And I feel like it is a waste of money as well, they mine as well just get life. -UNESHA BANKS

  7. I think the death penalty is kind of pointless because one…I do not believe in taking someone else’s life I could not live with that and two, like Gov. Wolf said it is expensive. Why can’t those that are on death row be sent to exile where they have to survive on their own because now they can choose whether they live or die depending on their survival skills? Does two wrongs make a right since one has killed do we have to kill the other. -Aniayla

  8. I think that a Death penalty is needed. A death penalty is because if you did the crime then you have to pay your time. what's the point of going to jail for like 25-Life or anytime to life. when you can just get killed instantly. if you just stay in jail until you die then that's torture. I truly think that a Death Penalty is needed. people knows what and what not to do.

I honestly don't think the death penalty is a good thing. I think these individuals do need to be severely punished but I think they should just get a life sentence, with no exceptions. They could even be put on death row or whatever. There are some cases where I feel like they should be given the death penalty. Like, if they admit to it.I understand why wolf wanted to hold off on sentencing people to the death penalty, for cost reasons.

  10. Interesting comments. Why do you think they should get a more serious penalty if they admit to it? I'm just wondering....In our current system, one tends to get a lighter sentence, often called a plea deal, if they admit to a crime.

  11. The death penalty isn't really effective. I feel like if someone kills them let them rot and think about what they did. Force them to live with that guilt (unless they are crazy). I mean sometimes there are exceptions where I feel it is necessary like if a person was really psychotic. Then they should figure something out but for people who just kill to kill they have to life their lives out with that pain of taking someone's life and stripping a family of a loved one.

  12. In my opinion the death penalty is only appropriate in some cases. Them cases should be when someone kills multiple people or rape multiple people. Other then that i don't think it is necessary to take someones life if they didn't take a life. Also I believe that being in prison for a long period of time is just like the death penalty because you will die in prison and never have your regular life. - Daveonne Banks

  13. 1st off, why kill them, being in prison is bad enough. Its just my opinion and i truly don't care about others.But...these felons or what ever you wanna call them. Shouldnt be killed off, I know what they had to do to goto prison would have to be wrong. But these people have familys, and it would be hard to know (for example) your Uncle Billy is gonna get executed. To others they might have the mindset of "OH KILL EM". But to you, its hard knowing a family member is gonna die becuase of what a old man sitting in a chair says

  14. I don't think that the death penalty is a good idea because I take it as basically taking them out of their misery. I would much rather be dead than spend the rest of my life in prison until I die. Its basically me being tortured because you never know what could happen while you are in prison. I think its better if you let them serve their life sentence as a punishment. They are put to jail as a permanent punishment for their crime and the death penalty although it is a permanent penalty because they are dead, it still doesn't punish them for the rest of their life. It hurts more to know that you are alive but not in the real world than to be dead and have no worlds. That is just my opinion. I do think that Wolf should have gotten consensus from the legislature just so there wouldn't have been any altercations or disagreements. -KinGoch.

I agree with you that Wolf should've gotten permission. There is a problem there. He wouldn't have been granted that permission by the Republican dominated legislature. So the question remains, should he have done it? That's anyone's opinion.

  15. I do not necessarily think that the death penalty is okay. I feel as though if someone has committed a crime, they should be locked away for life to suffer. Killing someone is most of the time what they want, or as I call it, the easy way out. Wolf should have had some type of consent, but then again he probably had his reasoning's. Maybe he knew he would be the only one who was against it! - MaiLani Pridgen

  16. I agree with Gov. wolf that death penalty is ineffective and unjust. I think those who kills someone need to be teach life lesson. Let them feel guilty and think about what they did. In other some of them are crazy and psychopath, who killed numbers of people, those peoples are out of mind. They definitely need death penalty. -karan
