Why did the Supreme Court overturn Plessy to deem separate but equal unconstitutional?
In other words, why did the court say segregation was illegal?  Be sure to offer a thorough and thoughtful response.  In addition, please respond to at least two other people

  1. The supreme court said that segregation was illegal because they saw that African- Americans can learn the same stuff as Whites. They wanted to give African--Americans separation but equal. So they set the law for illegal, so that everyone could be equal.

  2. They said it was illegal since even though they were treated the same they weren't treated equal, and under the 14th amendment that says that all citizens are suppose to be treated equally.

I agree with you but didn't they say that the 14th amendment had nothing to do with education?

    5. They weren't treated equally that is correct. The 14th amendment was definitely violated which is what ended the segregation.

Segregation is mean. People should not have to go around thinking that they are less than another person in terms of quality and potential. It's not like the country was gaining anything from it, they just was scared to change. they didnt want change. if they came to this time and saw obama, they would have a fit.they didn't want slavery to end, so they came up with the next best thing.

  4. The court said segregation was illegal because nothing was ever equal with blacks and whites while they were separate. Blacks always received low budget things whether it had to do with school, work or facilities. Whites were always treated superior. -Aniayla

  6. The court decided that segregation was illegal because they came to see that separate but equal was not equal at all. In reality that is not equal because the blacks were getting hand me down books and material, while predominate white schools were getting new stuff. Which could play a role in different learning. which would not be equal.

  7. The supreme court overturned Plessy because they seen it to be fair that they both were provided with the same thing. they felt that it was just personal feelings and they didn't do anything wrong. They made segregation illegal because they knew it was unfair for the children to get different education. The first case they couldn't achieve the goal but by the second it seemed wrong so things were set fair.

I agree that segregation was unfair to the children because they weren't getting the same quality as the white kids.

  8. The supreme Court said the segregation was illegal because according to the constitution of United States it violets the 14th amendments. Justice Warren said that we can't only look at the tangible factor but we also have to look at the intangible factors like cultural values and psychological effects. so, to conclude the separate but equal was doing more harm to the people than good so it had to be overturn.

  9. The supreme court made it illegal because it violated the Fourteenth Amendment. Also because it wasn't fair for some kids to walk miles just to get to a special school because of their race. -Shadai

  10. They said that it was illegal because it violated right of African Americans and it violated the 14th amendment. They realized that race is not a issue we are all equal- Daveonne

  11. It was illegal simply because it violated the 14 amendment. Also Justice Warren made a valid point that we cannon only look at the tangible factors but we have to take the intangible factors into consideration as well. - MaiLani Pridgen

    2. yea i guess you're right. the 14th amendment reverses anything like this so they can't make laws that violate it.

  12. The Supreme court ruled segregation illegal b/c it went against peoples rights. To be more precise the 14th and 13th amendments. Blacks werent treated equally ( 14th ad.) and it was still ran as if they were slaves (13th ad,) The separate but equal law was more of a personal preference for whites. - Tyshawn

  15. The supreme court overturned this because they realized that children were being negatively affected. They said the segregation was illegal because everyone is the same no matter their skin color. So they all should be offered the same opportunities.
